What is different about his approach compared to other psychologists or coaches?
He has a unique combination of transparency, integrity, compassion, candor, fun and humor along with incisive thought and perception and the willingness to express emotion.
Where’s the couch?
It’s at home! You don’t lie on a couch (you sit on it) while Dr. Shinaver sits back in a chair behind you scratching his beard and mumbling:“Uh, huh. Tell me more.”You actually interact with Dr. Shinaver face to face.
What is Integrity?
In short, it's what people would call “walking the walk”.
How do people maintain motivation over time?
This is a critical question that Dr. Shinaver feels is essential to your growth and development. He is excited to work with you to help find the answer for you.
And yes, you can call him at 317-641-7794 and he can start discussing that with you.
Are Compassion & Candor enough to help you improve your life?
Probably not. They sure do help though! They are necessary, but not sufficient which is why therapy, sometimes, doesn’t move a person forward.A coaches or therapist’s job is to step foot into another’s world, look around, get a feeling for the place and step back to help facilitate an honest evaluation of their world. However, that is not enough.People need a secure relationship borne out of candor and directness. Such a relationship affords the client an opportunity for deliberate action.Clarity is necessary, even in the midst of suffering. We must be honest with ourselves. Often that means that rallying one’s self to reengage. The client must take new action or stop doing something that is not working. It is this unique combination of compassion, candor and the ability to challenge people to dig deeper, to move toward growth- oriented action that distinguishes Dr. Shinaver. All of Dr. Shinaver’s work requires elements of that process. This is not a formula, but a unique experience with each person.
This is "personal coaching" it is unique to you and your relationship to Dr. Shinaver.Yes, there are consistent components and structure to the activities in which you may engage, but it is his relationship with you that helps to move you forward in your life.
This is why it is time to take the risk and contact Dr. Shinaver 317-641-7794 or e-mail him at

What's the point if you can't have fun?Helping people grow is great fun.Watching a person dramatically rise up out of struggles and overcome looming obstacles is riveting.Sometimes, like in a good dramatic film, a great guffaw is as appropriate and healing as a heartfelt cry.Counseling, coaching, consulting involve human beings and all of us are sustained by loving and laughing.
When you read business books they often talk about how doing your business should be fun and you should feel passionate about it.My business is talking with people; helping them heal and grow.I love people.I think they are fun, fascinating and surprising.I am passionate about people.I enjoy people.I love profound moving conversations and funny stories. I think the challenges in life are fun - certainly sometimes daunting, overwhelming, traumatic and even dispiriting but many times there is some fun to be had.
In fact, I've found that some of the people with the best sense of humor are people who've endured some of the worst experiences life can throw at you.I've been inspired, moved, and challenged by how people can overcome some of the most profoundly horrible experiences that life throws at them.
In my experience most people, especially those who do get better-and most do, really enjoy a big hearty laugh. As a matter of fact, even Freud who was by all accounts a quite serious guy identifies humor as one of the highest levels or most positive forms of psychological defense.
Humor, as a way of acknowledging your humanness and getting a kick out of your own foibles instead of letting them kick you in the pants is what coaching is all about. So, laughter is a good part and healthy part of coaching, consulting or counseling.Dr. Shinaver will enjoy laughing with you!
So, now you have a thumbnail sketch of me.You can watch some of my videos to get an idea of the humorous and serious aspects of me and just a touch of what I am like. But now is time to take action. What I am really interested in is how I can help you.The path of working with you is certain to be an adventure with drama and excitement. It will be moving toward an “excellent life”.
Call me, Dr. Shinaver, now at 317-641-7794. I might answer the phone myself.People are still surprised by that.Or e-mail me at

Prevention
Prevention is a concept that many people won't think about in the context of their mental health. However it has great salience with my work. For example, emotional stress has been linked to many major chronic diseases. To be more specific, an imbalance in cortisol/DHEA ratio (stress hormones) is associated with stress. This imbalance has been implicated in many chronic diseases, and is primarily related to stress. Here is a brief list of chronic diseases that are associated with this imbalance.
Diseases associated with Stress:
Obesity (Marin, 1992)
Diabetes (Nester, 1992)
Hypertension (Safagoj, 1992)
Heart disease (Barett-Connor, 1986)
Cancer (Bhatavdekar, 1994)
Alzheimer's (Nasman, 1995) (HeartMath®, 2007)
It appears that this list is just the tip of the iceberg. For example, in an abstract of the book Encyclopedia of Stress, volumes 1-4 (second edition) George Fink (2007) asserts:
"Over last decade, scientists have presented convincing research showing that psychological stress increases vulnerability to disease. They now understand more clearly that stress may be the thread tying together illnesses that were previously believed to be unrelated." (Fink, 2007)
The need to focus upon Stress management first is clear. But…there’s more…
What about mental health issues related to stress?
There is a massive list of mental health issues which relate to stress with innumerable references. We will simply do an overview here of mental health issues that relate to stress.
Mental Health Problems Associated with Stress:
Depression
Worsening of various anxiety disorders (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Post-Traumatic Disorder, etc.)
Burnout
Exhaustion
Chronic fatigue
Attention Problems
Behavior problems
Poor performance
Another interesting resource for this topic is Stress and Emotion:Anxiety, Anger, and Curiosity, Volume 17 by Charles D. Spielberger and Irwin G. Samson (Eds.) (2005).It might be better to ask which mental health problems are not worsened by stress? The list would be much shorter.
What does this mean for you?
A great deal, if you are interested in optimal functioning!
What this means is that your improved capacity to manage stress relates to the possibility of preventing the development of many diseases as well as a better ability to manage a variety of existing diseases.
In terms of your mental health, stress relates to depression, anxiety, your motivation to go to work in the morning, burnout, and your ability to be effective in a variety of roles of your life, both at work and at home.
If you are interested in optimal performance at home or at work, you need to be interested in stress management.Stress management should be at the core of any basic prevention program.
How do positive feelings relate to stress management and mental health?
This is what we will address in our work together. If optimal functioning is what you are about you need to call Dr. Shinaver at 317-641-7794.Or e-mail him at
