Life Transitions |

This is the theme of my work in the last few years. Several of my clients are going through a life transition. A few consider it a mid life transition. Others simply consider themselves to be going through a transition in life. Some elements of their stories will help you understand why I have chosen to shift the focus of my work from therapy to coaching. This has happened as my clients have worked through historical issues and wanted to move forward in their lives. Of course, I will protect their confidentiality, but the themes of this work are likely to resonate with your life. If that is the case then you are a person who would be a good fit with Dr. Shinaver.

Are You a Mom Who is Going Back to Work?

One woman is going through a transition in relationships from mom to employee where the work/life balance is challenged. She has 5 kids and she has been at home with them all through their childhood. She loves her roles of mother and wife, but she wants a little more – without losing the great family cohesion and sense of connection she provides as the ‘relationship glue’ in her house. Without her connection to everyone a little too much chaos seems to swirl. She has a dream of being a painter, but she doesn’t paint. She has known she has this talent for 15 years, but she has not painted. She has told herself that she had the more important job of raising her children and supporting her husband in his work.
Now she is realizing that modeling for her children – especially her daughters that she can contribute something through her creative work has become her mission. She is challenged by her own internal saboteur and the negative thinking that originally brought her in for help with anxiety and depression. Through work in counseling and personal training she lifted herself up after she had felt stuck. She is mentally and physically in shape now. Now she is focusing upon her life purpose and realizing that this transition in life is about a delicate balance between modeling for her kids pursuing her dream, but not losing her contact with them and her husband. |

Changing Your Career?

This focus upon life transitions has resulted in a sort of niche for Dr. Shinaver. He really could be called a Life Transition Coach. Another transition he helped a man negotiate is what might be considered a mid life transition. This is a major life transition in the purpose of one’s work. This man has worked in various businesses and is skilled in building businesses, but that is not as rewarding anymore. He seeks a purpose in his work. First there was focus upon sorting out his strengths. Now that that is clear there has been a focus upon this work life transition where more meaning needs to be derived out of building a business. This career transition is very much a transition in meaning. It is integrating meaning from his history with his present and in some ways liberating him from an older way of evaluating his life work and a refreshed perspective which looks at purpose and meaning while still paying the bills. Initially depression, anxiety and low self-esteem where the focus of our work. Now it is how to transition to a more meaningful career and having the courage and confidence to go for it. Life transition coaching is fascinating and rewarding as people work through transitions that create challenges, but also bring new meaning to their lives.

Starting Your Own Business?

Wow it is a difficult economy to come out of college and start adult life. This life cycle transition is quite a challenge today. Some young people are choosing to attempt to start their own businesses because no one is offering them jobs. This is especially fascinating. One young man who started his own company with a friend goes through daily challenges. This is a role in life in which you have to look in the mirror quite a bit. Your business gets better or worse depending upon you. That can be kind of lonely and there aren’t many guideposts along the way. This young man originally was concerned about anxiety, depression and obsessing. However, this real life transition is very challenging where one is both starting his own business and negotiating the various roles in adult life. So many transitions are occurring at once: relationships – dating, just having fun to getting serious, business: figuring out purpose, mission, values and how to build a business consistent with your values and talents. This is a very hard working stage of life, but potentially massively rewarding.

Are You Ramping up Your Business?

This working mom has decided to ramp up her business. She is in a stage of hiring employees. She first came in because anxiety was causing panic. Now she is expanding her interesting small business. The intersection of these transitions of her mother aging and dealing with historical issues overlaps with present day concerns of how to relate to employees. Now that some historical issues are in perspective it is time to move forward to focus upon goals. She is forging ahead.

Struggling with Work/Home Balance?

One mom has been on the career fast track for quite some time. Her son is now 3 and she wants to achieve a better work/home balance. How does she do this? Some counseling was in order, but now it is time to move forward with life coaching as she is ready to go to a new place in her life.
All of these life transitions are a part of Dr. Shinaver’s work. If you see yourself in one of these stories call him at 317-337-9227. Or e-mail him at charles.shinaver@gmail.com. This is the focus of his work.

Guiding principles of Dr. Shinaver's work:
"Compassion, "to suffer with", is a necessary ingredient for healing".
Candor and connection provide the fuel for healing relationships.
Transparency with others engenders their self-transparency which is an impetus toward personal growth.
Model, teach and train skills that empower, 'encourage' and even, embolden people to believe in, change, and heal themselves.
Biofeedback, involves the 'feeding back' of one's biological signals which were previously unconscious and thereby allows one to change them.
Biofeedback is inherently consistent with our value of fostering independence and healing of self.
Pursue Biofeedback and other technological solutions with clear-headedness and informed consent about its evidence supporting its use.
Build a model of understanding human functioning from clarity about the impact of the extremes of human experience.
Build upon what works with a continual search to find or create new products and services that can pave the way to greather growth.
Seek and coordinate innovative long-term solutions that foster independence and mental health.
Objectively track behavior during an intervention with multi-source feedback to compel dropping what doesn't work and refining what does.
Technology can help, but it cannot replace a healthy, compassionate and healing therapeutic relationship.
